Learn More About UNC Charlotte

The University of North Carolina is one of the best higher education institutions within Charlotte, NC. The campus is an exciting combination of quaint, quiet, lively, and loud. It offers students an exciting learning experience in a picturesque campus conveniently located from cultural, recreational, and adventurous destinations.

History

North Carolina experienced a rise in demand for higher education from the public in the postwar era. Therefore, in 1946 state officials developed 14 provisional higher education institutions, including The Charlotte Center, initiated on September 23rd of that same year.

The center had a student body of 278 men and women, functioning as a night school for first- and second-year students. Then, students could transfer their credits to the senior institutions in the state.

But as overcrowding surged in 1949, state officials closed the provisional learning centers, including the Charlotte Center. But this did not deter the local community from desiring a public institution for higher education.

So, education officials and Charlotte business people organized to appropriate the institution as Charlotte College. Local business leaders and state officials worked to incorporate the college into the North Carolina Community College System in 1958.

1961 saw the transfer of the school to a 1,000-acre campus 10 miles north of downtown Charlotte. Then finally, in 1965, the institution was incorporated as The University of North Carolina, the fourth one in the University of North Carolina System. By 2000, the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina appointed the institution as a research/doctoral university, as it remains today.

Attendees can study in the seven professional colleges offering 90 bachelor’s degrees, 63 master’s degrees, and 19 doctoral programs. UNC is among the top metropolitan research universities in the region.
