The Mint Museum (sometimes called Mint Museums) is a top innovative cultural institution of international art and design. It is North Carolina’s first art museum consisting of two locations, both in the city limits of Charlotte. Together, the two locations boast hundreds of collections displaying art and design from all over the world.
History
The Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, originally started with the location in Uptown, designed by William A. Strickland. It came to be when gold was discovered in the Charlotte area in 1799. By the 1830s, there was enough gold to justify the creation of a branch of the US Mint.
Thus in 1836, the Uptown branch began operations, even serving as a Confederate headquarters and hospital during the Civil War.
Then, in 1933, adjacent construction and expansion threatened its existence. So a group of preservationists led by Mrs. Harold C. Dwelle bought the building for $950 and moved it to Randolph road, where it remains to date.
The Mint Museum Randolph opened in 1936, showcasing permanent collections such as American Art, American and European ceramics, Ancient American Art, African Art, Asian Art, Contemporary art, and many others.
The Mint Museum of Craft + Design opened as a counterpart institution to house the museum’s growing collections of regional crafts and decorative arts in 1999. But by 2006, there were plans to expand the museum.
With the help of the Arts & Science Council plus multiple grants, the Mint Museum opened its location in Uptown in October 2010. Machado and Silvetti Associates designed this second building.
The Mint Museum Uptown houses Contemporary Art, American Art, and some European Art collections from the Mint Museum Randolph. It also has ceramics, glass, wood, and other materials from the Mint Museum of Craft + Design.
The Mint Museum Neighborhood, Charlotte NC
The Mint Museum Randolph opened in Charlotte’s Eastover neighborhood. The charming area was the city’s first suburb to build houses. It is located southeast of Uptown Charlotte.
The neighborhood has a population of about 2,765, with most planning to stay for at least 5 years. In addition, housing in this area costs between $500,000 and $5 million. The real estate is a mix of buildings dating back to the community’s founding and modern designs.

The Mint Museum Uptown is in Uptown Charlotte, also called Center City. It is the central business district of Charlotte, boasting several Fortune 500 companies’ headquarters.
Uptown is divided into four wards, with the Mint Museum residing in the third ward. You will find multiple entertainment and cultural attractions here, including the Knight Theater and the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.
