History

Founded in 1892, WSSU has a long and proud history of providing educational opportunities to African Americans. Simon Green Atkins founded the school as the ‘Slater Industrial Academy,’ and it was the first state-supported institution for African Americans in the state.

In 1925, the school changed its name to Winston-Salem Teachers College and began offering four-year degrees in education. In 1969, it became ‘Winston-Salem State University’ and began offering various degree programs, including business administration, nursing, engineering technology, and computer science.

Today, WSSU is one of the leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the US, with an enrollment of over 5500 students from all 50 states and several countries worldwide.

At WSSU, students can access various academic programs, including undergraduate degrees in arts and sciences, business and economics, education and human services, engineering technology, and computer science.

The university also offers a variety of student activities, including intramural sports, student organizations, Greek life, community service opportunities, study abroad programs, internships, research opportunities, career services assistance, and more.
