The main roads serving West Raleigh include Western Boulevard, Blue Ridge Road, Hillsborough Street, and Avent Ferry Road. The North Carolina State Fairgrounds and the PNC Arena are both nearby. These are around two miles from Rex Hospital.
History
West Raleigh district houses several Smithsonian institutions, which is why Raleigh is known as the “Smithsonian of the South”. The entrance is free in the North Carolina Museum of Art, which is one of the best visual arts institutions in the South. It features a 164-acre Museum Park, a center for special touring exhibitions, a striking gallery structure, and a world-class collection that includes more than 30 sculptures by Auguste Rodin.
The historic Pullen Park, established in 1887, borders the main NCSU campus. The park is one of North Carolina’s most well-known family destinations. It boasts a community center, an arts center, a C.P. Huntington miniature replica train ride, a 1911 Gustave A. Dentzel menagerie carousel, boat rentals, tennis courts, ball fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, outdoor cafés, and the perennial Theatre In The Park, the Ira David Wood III Pullen Park Theatre.

It welcomes more than 1.5 million visitors and hosts over 150 events annually, including NCSU Wolfpack men’s basketball games and many NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second-round games. Also, the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, champions of the 2006 NHL Stanley Cup Finals, call PNC Arena home.
The PNC Arena also hosts mega performances by Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Beyoncé, Disney On Ice, and other international touring acts. The NCSU football team plays at Carter-Finley Stadium, across the parking lot. The North Carolina State Fairgrounds lie next to Carter-Finley Stadium. If you are in the area in mid-October you can join the over one million visitors to the North Carolina State Fair, the state’s biggest yearly event.
The 10-day fair includes exhibits of agriculture, livestock, culture, arts, midway amusements, and nightly concerts by nationally renowned musicians. The fairgrounds hold several different events during the remainder of the year. And weather permitting, the Raleigh Market, North Carolina’s largest market of its sort, presents here every weekend.
