History
Raleigh’s University Park is home to a variety of historically significant neighborhoods. In 1869, emancipated slaves established a Freedmen’s town in Oberlin. Staff and faculty housing at NC State University was located in the Maiden-Enterprise Area in the early 1900s. In 1910, a farmer by the name of Hardy Bagwell developed a neighborhood on his farm. Wilmont was constructed in 1924 on the ruins of an ancient plantation. You are in University Park when you are relaxing in the Raleigh Rose Garden or seeing a play at the Raleigh Little Theater. The history is well-known in the neighborhood and goes on endlessly.
The first houses in University Park were constructed in the late 1800s, but the ones that are still in use today and have been tastefully renovated date mostly from the 1920s to the 1960s. After a brief hiatus in the 1980s, work resumed in the 1990s and continues to this day with new buildings that closely resemble those built in the 1920s to 1940s.
