The Charlotte Museum of History lies outside uptown Charlotte on a magnificent eight-acre wooded yard. The museum was initially set up to preserve the oldest surviving house in Mecklenburg County, the Alexander Rock House. The museum is one of the structures erected during the aggressive revolutionary period and is deeply immersed in diverse cultures and regional heritage.
The museum also preserves the city’s history of music and the untold experiences of Charlotte troops during World War 1. The Charlotte Museum of History is now a designated historical landmark. The museum hosts and shares Queen City’s deep history and connects curious visitors to the future.
History
The museum was initially founded to preserve the Alexander Rock House. But even before that, several artifacts uncovered show that people lived on the grounds for thousands of years. Numerous stone projectiles and ceramic objects prove that the indigenous people used the land for hunting and short-term habitation sites. The history museum, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, wasfounded in 1774 and is surrounded by historic landmarks.
In 1943, the then-owner of the Alexander Rock House surrendered it to the Methodist Church’s Western North Carolina Annual Conference. The Methodist church converted the structure into a retirement home known as the Methodist Home. Later, daughters of the American Revolution began a project to restore the Alexander Rock House to its initial appearance and preserve it. All this while, the current museum was open to the public for tours.
After renovations of the house in 1969, the mansion was put under the care of the Mint Museum in 1975. Later, the Mint Museum supported the Charlotte city council’s idea of relocating the museum to the city’s park. The relocation was prompted by the Mint Museum’s desire to focus solely on fine arts.
Alexander Home Foundation regained control of the house and museum in 1990 after raising more than $2 million required by the council. From an eight-acre wooded yard in the initial stages, the Charlotte Museum of History is today domiciled in a 37,000-square-foot building.
