History
Summerfield was founded in 1769 by Charles Bruce. It was initially called Bruce’s Crossroads until John Summerfield, an evangelist, held a religious gathering there in 1812. The townspeople were so moved by his message that they decided to rename the town after him.
The early occupants were farmers and grew crops such as tobacco and cotton on their plantations. Over time, the area became more urbanized, and it wasn’t long before people started moving into the neighborhood.
