The Raleigh Greenway, located in Raleigh, NC, is a trail system running through the city. It began in 1974 and now covers a large section of Wake County, over 3800 acres (12 km2) and 112 miles (161km). The system is part of extensive regional and national trail networks, like the Mountains-to-Sea trail and the East Coast Greenway.

History
The Greenway system was first conceived in the early 1970s when Raleigh residents became concerned about rapid growth and urbanization in the area. Many people feared urbanization would impact the city’s natural environment. City officials developed the Greenway Master Plan to address the residents’ concerns. This idea started when The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission and the Raleigh City Council commissioned a report known as Raleigh for the city council.
The Raleigh Greenway took root following the approval of the Raleigh Greenway Regulation in 1987. The law outlined a strategy for creating a comprehensive network of greenways throughout the city and decreed the use of public funds to buy land and develop trails.
In the early 1990s, the Raleigh Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department commenced buying land for the greenway network. The city had developed parks and trails on about 600 acres of land it had acquired by the decade’s end.
The greenway system continued to grow and develop in the 2000s. The greenway system saw its first significant expansion in 2003 when the city bought sizeable land next to the Neuse River. And also the multipurpose trail connecting downtown Raleigh to the Neuse River trail.
In 2010, the capital area greenway system continued to expand, encouraging the growth of neighboring municipalities’ systems, and providing connections across counties and towns.
