History
NoDa, located in Charlotte, North Carolina has a fascinating history that began in 1903 when a group of wealthy textile leaders conceived the idea to build Highland Park Mill. This was followed by similar developments, including housing for mill workers built along North Davidson Street and later the Mecklenburg Mill. But Johnston Mill, built in 1913, gave NoDa its real boost as businesses sprouted up throughout the neighborhood.
However, its fortunes began to decline in 1953 when the mills closed, leaving NoDa without a defining industry. The year 1969 saw Matheson Avenue built through the area, which helped trigger further disarray as it demolished homes and disconnected neighborhood streets.
However, a rebirth for the area began in 1985 when partners Paul Sires and Ruth Ava Lyons began renovating buildings in NoDa and breathed new life into it. Then, almost ten years later, Steve Holt came up with the name NoDa – short for North Davidson – which has become closely associated with this unique place ever since.
