History

In the late 19th century, William Burns Newell and his family relocated to a rural area of Charlotte, North Carolina, now known as Newell. At that time, the land was mainly comprised of scattered farms and a road leading to Concord. Along with his brother John A. Newell and brother-in-law N. W. Wallace, William Burns founded the community which would come to bear his name.


Although rural conditions prevailed then, the combination of pastoral scenery and an emerging railroad system quickly put Newell on the map as a rapidly growing district in southeastern North Carolina. All these years later, that growth continues as residents seek out a quaint but thriving community.
