History
Little Sugar Creek evokes much history just as it paints the picture of a hidden natural treasure. The name originated from the Sugaree tribe, who lived around Sugar Creek. The Sugaree Indians occupied areas around the creek whose water was unfit to drink. The locals named it Little creek Sugar. The 16-mile national crown jewel runs smoothly through the heart of Charlotte-Macklenburg.
In the early years of its transformation, several sections of the magical Little Sugar Creek were either rerouted or covered by the numerous parking lots. Little Sugar was exposed to some of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, making it vulnerable to many years of pollution and human interference. The once beautiful bends disappeared, and several highways and parking lots have sprung up, barring many people from seeing the beautiful meander and banks.
Little Sugar Creek Greenway boasts numerous sources, which makes it a fantastic scene to watch. The tributaries of Little Sugar used to be more than just backward ditches. Presently, the creek snakes its way into the busy uptown, entirely hidden by the looping lanes of a highway.
Once complete, the greenway park will feature 19 miles of trails down to the South Carolina state line. The park will also link Central Piedmont Community College, Park Road, and Carolina Place shopping areas.
