History

Kernersville, North Carolina, is the largest suburb of Winston-Salem. It was incorporated in 1873, less than a decade after the conclusion of the Civil War. At the time of incorporation, the town had only 147 residents. The town is included in the Greensboro – Winston – Salem – High Point metropolitan area.

Native Americans originally inhabited the site on which Kernersville stands today until European settlers arrived in the late 1700s. In 1817, Joseph Kerner purchased land from William Dobson and established a small settlement that would later become known as Kernersville.

The town grew slowly but steadily over the years and became an important trading center for farmers in the surrounding areas. By 1952, Lake Kernersville was the only water source for residents until they could hook up to city/county utility water lines.

This lake has since become an essential part of Kernersville’s history and culture, offering recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming.

Kernersville also boasts many historic homes that have been preserved over time, including Körner’s Folly, considered one of the most spectacular historic homes in all of North Carolina. The house was built by Jule Gilmer Körner between 1880 and 1884 and serves as a reminder of Kernersville’s rich history and culture.
