Irving Park is a neighborhood in Greensboro that is considered a North Carolina classic. Irving Park is an almost four-square-mile area of Greensboro north of Fisher Park and downtown. The boundaries of Irving Park are regarded as N Elm St, Lawndale Dr, Pisgah Church Rd, and Wendover Blvd. It is a hub of power and influence being the home to Senators, Representatives, philanthropists, US Ambassadors, and captains of Fortune 500 companies.
Irving Park, the affluent neighborhood in Greensboro was born from the idea that rural settings were superior to urban ones. This ideal incorporated changing ideas about leisure, density, zoning, exclusivity, nature, and aesthetics. The product was a planned, strictly regulated, and landscaped neighborhood, setting a precedent for suburban development in Greensboro. Additionally, Irving Park was one of the first towns in the area to incorporate a public golf course into its master plan.
History
The Southern Real Estate Company, a development company founded by A.W. McAlister, R.G. Vaughan, and A.M. Scales, created Irving Park. The Greensboro Country Club was incorporated on April 3, 1911, marking the start of the community’s growth. A group of young lawyers and insurance professionals constructed the first set of houses.
The Colonial-style residence at 309 Sunset Drive was started in 1912 by Junius Irving Scales, an attorney and the man who gave Irving Park its name. The excellent Colonial Revival mansion at 313 Sunset was erected in 1912–1913 by vice president of Dixie Fire Insurance Company Harry Bush, and a handsome Colonial residence at 405 Meadowbrook Terrace was built in 1912–1913 by automobile dealer R. Jesse Mebane.
In January 1913, the name “Irving Park” was decided upon, and in June 1914, the Irving Park Company was formally established. The new business replaced Scales and his Southern Real Estate Company in the developing area. The change in ownership drove the second phase of expansion.
In 1914, the company engaged city planner John Nolen to improve the environment of the already planned settlement and to extend the roads, parks, and buildable lots west to Battleground Avenue. Robert A. Cridland’s work as a landscape architect helps to define the third stage of development. The Vanderbilts had previously hired a designer with offices in Philadelphia and Atlanta to remodel their New York house in Hyde Park which has a view of the Hudson River.
