Formerly known as the Natural Science Center of Greensboro, Greensboro Science Center (GSC) is a zoological park and science museum set up in 1957. Over the last 60 years, the science center has provided education and entertainment to the people of Gate City. Some featured exhibits include penguins, marine life, gibbons, lemurs, and much more. At the zoo, for example, people can enjoy close-up encounters alongside capable animal keepers. The park also features Skywild, which is a treetop type of adventure course. The course aims to enable participants to experience different animal behaviors while enjoying a great workout. There are various enjoyable activities to participate in, such as leaping, brachiating, and crawling, to allow visitors to understand life’s diversity better.
History
Established in 1957 as the Greensboro Junior Museum, the center grew as a nature park. Since its inception, the GSC has been a hotspot for people of every age to come and learn about all-natural scientific aspects.Greensboro Science Center is a member of the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and became accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in 2008.
The accreditation from the AZA allows guests to utilize the AZA’s reciprocity program. So, guests can get discounts on their admission at the GSC if they are members of a fellow AZA organization. Soon afterward, the center for a $20 million makeover, initiating the Time Warner Cable Extreme Weather Gallery and the HealthQuest Exhibit. In 2015, though, the center opened the popular SKYWILD adventure park.
By the center’s 50th anniversary in 1997, though, the GSC was attracting upwards of 200,000 visitors annually. Attendance has since jumped up to 434,718 tourists in 2017. In 2021 the newest and largest expansion in the Center’s history to the Greensboro Science Center, Revolution Ridge became accessible to the public.
