History

The Carolina Real Estate and Investment Company built the first 50 homes in 1909 and subsequently built a school in 1912.
Annexation continued through 1957, resulting in an even greater population boom and continual development of local businesses. During this period, transportation options also improved as trackless trolleys replaced Glenwood’s trolley service in 1934. As part of this revitalization effort, there was also an increase in commercial activity as brick buildings began popping up throughout the area during the 1920s.
In 1956, Duke Power made a crucial move that dramatically altered its landscape by replacing the historic trolley system with diesel-powered buses. This transition caused property values to drop and left much of the area neglected and forgotten until several revitalization projects were initiated in the 1970s and 80s.
