History
First Ward was constructed in 1891 and is still standing. The neighborhood has many historic preservation-worthy buildings, churches, and schools. John Locke, one of the architects who worked on First Ward, also designed Dilworth Town Hall in 1888. First Ward is also home to many notable people, like the late Billy Graham, who delivered his first sermon in Charlotte at the old First Presbyterian Church.
Due to its nature, the area isarguably the most racially diverse neighborhood in Charlotte. It is also one of the most economically influential neighborhoods in the area. First Ward is home to many historically significant buildings, such as the former Union Missionary Baptist Church, which had an important role in African American culture during Reconstruction and Jim Crow. This area is also known for its art deco architecture built during World War I. Having a diverse blend of styles, First Ward is often compared to SoHo on Manhattan Island for its vibrancy.
