Elizabeth is located in northeastern Mecklenburg County. The Union County line and the I-485 freeway split the town’s boundaries. It is also adjacent to the cities of Pineville, Matthews, and Mint Hill. A charming old-fashioned town with a small-town feel, thearea boasts all sorts of homes in all price ranges, ranging from historic homes on large lots to new affordable suburban living. Most of the housing was developed in the early 20th century. Large, multi-family houses were constructed and regularly maintained in this area. History
Elizabeth was established in 1892 by the R. H. Long Company, which purchased 1,200 acres of land in northeast Mecklenburg County. The company then plotted the new town on a grid pattern with wide streets.
Original purchasing rights for the land in this square belonged to Thomas Spratt. In 1843, the sale of the property was put up for public auction to pay off debts that Spratt owed, hence the R. H. Long Company. The square was later named in honor of Elizabeth Hawkins-Middleton, who served as mayor from 1925-1926 and donated her land to construct the building now known as The Curtis Building. Elizabeth is home to many historic buildings, including a historic city hall, fire department building, and courthouse building with adjoining jail cells from 1903. It also has a library within its original Cissna Public Schools Building (1917) and the recently rebuilt Catawba County Museum, housed in the old Novembrana Union Church (1904).
The original name of Elizabeth Square (then called Spratt’s Square) was later changed in 1948 by the popular vote to its current name: Charlotte Hawkins Brown Memorial Park and Fountain.
