East Raleigh lies around Capital Boulevard near New Hope Road and the I-440 beltline. Most of East Raleigh’s construction lies along major thoroughfares such as U.S. 1 (Capital Boulevard), New Bern Avenue, New Hope Road, Buffaloe Road, and Poole Road. East Raleigh has several platted sections, including the post-Civil War neighborhoods of Smith-Haywood and Saint Petersburg. Other Neighborhoods include Hedingham, New Hope, Madonna Acres, Longview, Lockwood, Thompson-Hunter, and Wilder’s Grove. The town of Knightdale encircles the region on its eastern side.
History
The East Raleigh neighborhood was developed mainly from 1865 through 1940 by both white and black real estate entrepreneurs. East Raleigh-South Park is the largest historic African American neighborhood in Raleigh. The African American neighborhoods that grew from the immediate aftermath of the Civil War through the first decades of the 20th century form the East Raleigh-South Park Historic District.
The thirty-block region, primarily residential with working- and middle-class housing stock, churches, and mini supermarkets lie east and south of downtown Raleigh. The homes are closely spaced out and occasionally close to the street and feature well-kept yards and flower beds. The oldest part of East Raleigh is west of East Street and north of South Street and sits within the original Raleigh city borders.
Many homes in the area are nineteenth-century buildings, the oldest from around 1850. Also, most homes feature vernacular architectural designs, such as shotguns and triple-A cottages. Applied detail includes things like attic vents, porches, and porch railings.
Other typical twentieth-century house designs include front-gabled, side-gabled, and hipped-roof homes that are two to three rooms deep and three rooms wide. There are also a few wide and shallow side-gabled, two-story I-houses, typical of rural areas. Some homes have grocery stores, and there are corner groceries.

Steeped in history, East Raleigh is still expanding as more and more visitors choose to settle here and establish roots. A Greek Revival home built in 1855, a detached kitchen, a cotton gin house, a livestock barn, a carriage house, an herb garden, and a pecan grove are all part of this antebellum homestead. Enjoy the picnic areas and stop at the Farm History Center, where youngsters will love the Farmer’s Corner interactive learning experience.
Take some time to tour Saint Augustine’s University in addition to the surviving antebellum homes, historic districts, and other structures with intriguing histories. This HBCU was established in 1867 and is home to several historic landmarks, including Saint Augustine’s University Historic Chapel, the oldest landmark on campus.
