History
The museum was born out of historian Beth Crabtree’s dream, who wanted to preserve the history of Raleigh for future generations. It opened its doors to the public in 1993. After Crabtree died, the city took on the responsibility for the operation in 2012, and COR’s friends continued to fund the museum.
Since then, it has grown into a place where you can learn about everything from local artists to historical architecture. The museum also hosts events like lectures and book signings by local authors and historians.

The collection includes Civil War memorabilia, Native American artifacts, weapons, and pieces from the state’s African-American history. Some of these items include a razorback hog skull, a card table made by enslaved people during their time at the plantation, and clothing worn by enslaved people who worked at the plantation during the Civil War.
There are also galleries devoted to art from around the world. The museum also has an outdoor garden where you can have lunch or just relax with some of your favorite plants. There are plenty of opportunities to learn about Raleigh’s history and see what other cultures offer.
An overview of the city’s founding and growth is given in The Story of Raleigh. It showcases how people lived in the past and adapted to their surroundings. Visitors can also learn about some of their favorite places around town and less-known facts about them!

Visitors can buy tickets for the museum’s annual fundraising event, Wine and Cheese Night at the Museum.
The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department operates Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is closed on Mondays, with extended hours during some events or special exhibits.
