Charlotte Douglas International Airportopened its doors in 1936 as a municipal airport for Charlotte. It began as a civilian airport and aimed to create employment for millions of people in the US who had lost their jobs during the Great Depression. It started operations with three runways and just one terminal building. At the time, Eastern Airlines ran the airport and had a handful of regularly scheduled flights.
Later, the airport became a military base under the US Army Air Force. The army renamed it Charlotte Air Base and it served as an antisubmarine patrol base during the Second World War. In 1954, the airport was renamed Douglas Municipal Airport in honor of former Mayor Ben Elbert Douglas, Sr. Today the airport is a central hub for American Airlines.
History
The construction of the airport began in 1930 and was completed in 1936. During the second world war, the US Air Force took over the airport. 1954 saw the opening of a new passenger terminal to meet the increasing number of passengers. After introducing a new passenger terminal, Delta Airlines introduced modern jet-drive planes.
During the late sixties and early seventies, much expansion work took place. In 1979, the airport got a new runway and a modern control tower, and an additional 7,400 square-meter international concourse came up in the 1990s. The concourse has undergone major facelifts, with a major one done between 2007 and 2015.
Today, the Charlotte Douglas International Airport is among the world’s busiest airports, with 1,424 arrivals and departures. It’s a major hub and currently ranks as the sixth busiest airport in the US. There are ongoing expansions to different facilities. Plans are also underway to expand the passenger concourse and the parallel runway. Charlotte Douglas Airport’s single terminal has a Bank of America branch and several ATMs.
