The team’s founder, Jerry Richardson, now holds a 48% share. In 2003 and 2016, the team reached the Super Bowl, but the players were unsuccessful in winning the trophy. The Panthers have also undergone some significant changes recently, including the retirement of longtime head coach Rivera and the appointment of Matt Rhule as the new coach in 2020.

History
After six years of anticipation, the Carolina Panthers were awarded an NFL expansion franchise in October 1993.
The dream started in July 1987 when Richardson met with a group of interested people in Charlotte to discuss the viability of competing in the multi-city competition for two NFL expansion clubs. Richardson made it official on December 15, putting the Panther’s hat in the ring.
One of the first assignments was to choose a stadium site. While sites in South and North Carolina were considered, on December 15, 1989, Richardson Sports announced that Uptown Charlotte would become the future location of a privately financed stadium accommodating 70,000 fans.
Businessmen, politicians, and locals banded together after Richardson’s statement to show the NFL that the city could support an NFL club. In October 1993, the Carolinas was chosen by NFL owners as the 29th NFL franchise and the first expansion team since 1976.
The team started competing in the NFL as a member of the NFC West division and later moved to the South in 2002. Their first season was in 1995, and they advanced to the NFC Championship Game in their second year. They remained a competitive club throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, making it to the Super Bowl in 2003 but losing to the New England Patriots.
Throughout its history, the team has experienced several successful seasons and has had several outstanding players, such as defensive end Julius Peppers, linebacker Luke Kuechly, and quarterback Cam Newton.
