History
Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is the oldest and longest-running weekly race track in NASCAR, having been in operation since 1949. The venue has seen some of the most iconic moments in NASCAR history. The stadium was initially built for collegiate football games in 1937, trotter horse racing later on.
It wasn’t until 1939 that it began hosting car races. The first type of racing hosted at the stadium was midget car racing from 1939 to 1949. Stock car racing was initially started by one Bill France Sr. with Alvin Hawkins. Both men were the founding fathers of NASCAR and Bowman Gray, the first weekly track and the first paved track NASCAR raced on.
Since then, Bowman Gray Stadium has become known as “The Madhouse” due to its wild and unpredictable racing action. It has also earned a reputation as one of the most challenging tracks on the circuit due to its tight corners and short straightaways.
