History

The Battle of Guilford preceded the development of Lindley Park by more than one century, but it set the foundation for settlement in the area. At the time, Guilford represented a defeat for America, but it became a turning point for the nation. Following the revolution, Lindley Park, as part of Greensboro, was a sleepy courthouse town.

During the civil war, most of the area was also confederate. Though there were no battles in the area, refugees and wounded soldiers recovered in the neighborhoods. Lindley Park was developed in the early 20th century following the commission of a new resort park. J. Van Lindley, a successful pomologist, donated 22 acres of land to the Greensboro Electric company, provided it would be used as a park. When the lake closed in 1917, the city hired Sumner Draper to design the Lindley Park neighborhood. Many original design elements are still present, such as the colonial housing and the stone column entryways.
